From Life to the Stage

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

Didik, me and his relatives in front of his childhood home

Temanggung is situated at the foot of the Gunung Sumbing. Once I had woken up, bathed, eaten and been offered a massage by Mr. Didik’s aunt, Mr. Didik himself took me on a stroll around the village. He showed me where his family’s graveyard is located in the village’s Chinese Cemetery, the river that still prompts stories of headless ghosts from wartimes, tobacco fields and other places that were part of his early years. Sharing these moments with Mr. Didik helps one understand the importance and place he gives to the translation of daily life events in his work and how his amicability finds its way from the everyday life to the stage.
